“I found myself in the street gangs, hanging out with the Gangster Disciples. I thought it was love, but instead found myself in and out of jail for the next fifteen years. Several times after being released from jail I became involved with the drug world. My drugs of choice included LSD, PCP, crack, heroine, and cocaine. I became a prisoner to drugs and violence.”

It’s important to realize that words shape our beliefs and impact our actions. Insults take many forms. They all hurt. Racial, ethnic, and sexual slurs are particularly abusive because they reflect a history of oppression, therefore there is more power to inflict damage with such slurs. Do children need to be reminded that they are members of a denigrated class?

Kirk Hinrich scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half Saturday night as West High achieved a dream, defeating West Des Moines Valley for the Class 4a state title, 65-57.
